On 26 October, we left Sintra and drove south to Tavira in the Algarve region of Portugal. When we crossed the Tagus River in Lisbon as we were leaving, we were able to see the giant Jesus, Christo Rei (pedestal 269 ft. statue 92 ft.), looking down at us – wow, that was one big Jesus! We began our travels into Spain by boarding a train on 17 September for Barcelona from Narbonne, France. As some of you may remember from our 2016 trip to Europe, we were in Barcelona for 2 nights, but wanted to come back and see more of architect Antoni Gaudi’s work, finish walking the rest of the famous Las Ramblas pedestrian walk, and eat more tapas (small foods).

The rain hit the Pyrenees in earnest as we left on 11 September and drove north to Albi, France for 5 nights in a lovely, modern Airbnb apartment. Albi, known for its Gothic cathedral, birthplace of painter Henri de Toulouse Lautrec, half-timbered buildings, and arched brick bridges (earliest dating back to 1020) winds itself around the Tarn River.

We left our cozy and rustic cottage in the Loire Valley for a cozy modern cottage in the Nouvelle Aquitaine Region of southwest France on 2 September. After a five-hour drive, we arrived at our Airbnb cottage, just a short drive outside the city of Sarlat-la-Canéda, for a one week stay.
