After leaving Calistoga, we drove across a smoked filled California to overnight in Modesto, CA then Yosemite National Park. Driving up into the park, we left the smoke from the southern California fires behind. We were last here in the fall of 1985. Using D’s senior parks pass, we spent 3 nights. While there was no snow on the ground as we had hoped for, this was definitely a less crowded and nonetheless glorious time to visit. We stayed at the Yosemite Lodge. No that’s not the historic Majestic Hotel (previously named the Ahwahnee). The first day was spent chasing the light as it moved around the Yosemite valley. We began our day up and out by 7 a.m. with temperature in the 20s to catch the first rays of light hitting frosty Yosemite Falls. We followed the light the entire day logging 10 miles by the time we caught sunset on Half Dome. The following day we enjoyed a photo walk with a local photographer.
After Yosemite, we spent the holiday time with friends in Arizona. That stop put a wrap on our 2017 travels. As the new year begins, we know we will be staying in the desert southwest into the spring. We’re still in the discussion stage of planning a general route and we’ll keep you posted. Here’s to a happy and healthy new year for all. Cheers!
Thanks for joining our journey.
